Avatar 2 Title
James Cameron has previously stated that the film will likely not be entitled “Avatar 2” since Jake is no longer an avatar at the end of the first movie, but rather a Na’vi. No final title has yet been announced officially, but an April 2016 press release featured a new “Avatar” logo (found in the infobox at the top). Additionally, a November 2018 BBC article claimed that the title would be Avatar: The Way of Water. Cameron later explained in a February 2019 ET interview that the title was one of many under consideration and no final decision about titles had been made yet.
On April 25th, 2022, the Polish branch of Disney announced that the Polish name would be “Avatar: Istoda Wody”, translating to “Avatar: The Essence of Water” in English. “Avatar: The Way of Water” was later confirmed to be the final, English title during Walt Disney’s CinemaCon 2022 presentation.
Avatar 2 Release Date
Avatar 2 is coming out on December 16, 2022, a year after its previous Dec. 2021 release date, which wasn’t its first date. All production on the project was shut down.
Dec. 17 was the date previously published on 20th Century Films’ Avatar.com website. Then, the official Avatar Twitter account tweeted a letter from Cameron explaining how the film’s holiday release has been canceled “due to the impact the pandemic has had on our schedule.”
Avatar 2 began production on April 22, 2017, according to a Facebook post made on the film franchise’s official page. That page showed four release dates for the Avatar films that have been either scrapped or changed around, which claimed that Avatar 2 would release in December 2020.
The full set of release dates is as follows:
Avatar 2: December 16, 2022
Avatar 3: December 20, 2024
Avatar 4: December 18, 2026
Avatar 5: December 22, 2028
Avatar 2 Plot
Over the years since the first film, Cameron has teased some details of the plot of Avatar 2, which will deal with “familial and imprisonment themes”. Cameron also pointed out that the films can all stand on their own, so if you missed the original film, you will still enjoy watching the sequels.
“Each movie is a standalone movie that we would wanna go see,” producer Jon Landau said. “You don’t need to have seen the first Avatar to see Avatar 2. It sits there and we’re gonna take people on a visual and an emotional journey that comes to its own conclusion.”
Avatar 2 will be set 12 years after the events of the first Avatar film. Neytiri is now the high priestess and Sully is the chieftain of their clan. They’ve settled down and started a family. It’s also reported that they will be journeying beyond the forests of Pandora into underwater and volcanic environments that Cameron said (via Empire) will make “you shit yourself with your mouth wide open”.
Avatar 2 filmed its motion capture scenes underwater to capture the importance of water.
Cameron talked to Collider about it, explaining, “It’s never been done before and it’s very tricky because our motion capture system, like most motion capture systems, is what they call optical base, meaning that it uses markers that are photographed with hundreds of cameras.”
“The problem with water is not the underwater part, but the interface between the air and the water, which forms a moving mirror. That moving mirror reflects all the dots and markers, and it creates a bunch of false markers.
“It’s a little bit like a fighter plane dumping a bunch of chaff to confuse the radar system of a missile. It creates thousands of false targets, so we’ve had to figure out how to get around that problem, which we did.”
According to plot details, the R.D.A. (the invading human military force that brought Jake Sully to Pandora in the first film) will return to invade Pandora once again.
During an interview with Empire, Producer Jon Landau (Avatar, Titanic) shared some details about Jake and Neytiri’s mixed-species family, which includes three Navi children named Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), and Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss). The couple has also adopted a human son named Miles Sorocco AKA “Spider” (Jack Champion).
