‘Blonde’ wins a Razzie Award for the worst film; Tom Hanks and Jared Leto win for worst actor

A girl’s best friend isn’t the Razzies.

The 43rd annual Golden Raspberry Awards (aka the Razzies), which honour the year’s most heinous performances and films, have named “Blonde,” Netflix’s exploitative drama about Marilyn Monroe, the “winner” of the worst movie. The NC-17-rated film, based on Joyce Carol Oates’ 2000 novel of the same name, also won the award for the worst screenplay.

The award comes as Ana de Armas prepares for Sunday’s Academy Awards, where she is nominated for best actress for her tragic performance as the late Hollywood starlet. However, “Blonde” was not the only film to win two Razzies this year.

The first Razzie Award for the worst supporting actor goes to Tom Hanks

Razzie Award

Eight Oscars, including best picture, are up for grabs with “Elvis,” although Tom Hanks did manage to score two Razzies. The adored A-lister won the prize for worst supporting actor for his portrayal of Elvis Presley’s tyrannical manager Col. Tom Parker, who had a moustache (Austin Butler). Because of his usage of strong prosthetics and an even heavier accent, Hanks was also handed the award for worst screen combination.

Jared Leto, the worst actor in “Morbius,” Sony’s Marvel antihero flop, and the worst supporting actress also walked away with two prizes (Adria Arjona). The comic book movie received only 16% of favourable ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, and it became a global meme in part because of how poorly (and repeatedly) it performed in theatres.

By nominating a young actor, the Razzies admit a “mistake”

Razzie Award

Ryan Kiera Armstrong, then 12 years old, was nominated for worst actress for the movie “Firestarter” when the Razzie Award nominations were released in January. This caused online backlash for the organisation. John Wilson, a co-founder of the Razzie Award, revoked the nomination and apologised, saying that no one under the age of 18 will be taken into consideration for future “awards.”

By giving themselves the worst actress prize, the Razzies “won by a landslide,” according to a press release, adding insult to injury.

Also receiving this year’s Razzie award Redeemer Award is Colin Farrell, who was nominated for worst actor in 2004’s “Alexander” but is currently up for best actor in “The Banshees of Inisherin” at the Oscars. Over 1,000 moviegoers and professionals in the business vote for the Razzies. Winners are now announced via the organization’s YouTube channel instead of the years-long in-person celebrations.
